Dawns will be red!
In 2014 Red Dawns Festival celebrates 15 years of its existence. Not enough for the golden jubilee, too much for timid celebrations.
After fifteen years, the ongoing inventory balance is as follows: more than 42 members have participated in the organisational team, more than 120 volunteers have helped co-creating the festival. More than 300 individuals and collectives from a total of 27 countries have performed at the festival. One Master’s thesis has been written on the topic of the Red Dawns Festival and at least three types of genders have been represented; the biggest donation we have received was 300,000 tampons on two square metres, which – in gross – would represent a life-time stock for at least fifty women.
Since we have benefited from feminism and queer instead of profit, our world has been enriched with life lessons, for which we could hardly say they were granted to us. We have earned them at the expense of free time, sleepless nights, missed work commitments, study lectures and hugs in a warm bed. The more it seemed to us that creating during the lack of public funding was unbearable, the more the state of emergency for workers in general – and especially for those operating in the arts and culture – became normal. Despite all the challenges, the festival, after all these years, has not become a private company for the exploitation of the public money or a family-owned company, which – regarding the circumstances of the state of arts and culture – we consider in our favour.
While celebrating emancipation of women and men on the 8th March, we might have, along the way, forgotten about the annual thematic focus that gives tone to each and every festival. Even today doing so seems a luxury to us. In the given circumstances, the organisation of the festival itself is an act of political and social hygiene; it has been such since the very beginning when women artists began presenting their work at Metelkova. For several years now, the festival is not only feminist but also queer. Patriarchal and capitalist exploitation, in fact, needs chauvinism and heteronormativity in the same way as homo cons need their Republicans, their rightists, their Vatican and their Janša. Or how the Catholic Church needs the referendum with which it kidnaps the State to incite people against same-sex marriages.
Feminism requires individuals to position themselves in relation to the world. After fifteen years we are aware that gender cannot be a category that would determine our fate, but that we can also screw around with it. We have been doing this for fifteen years already, and, we figure, we will sooner run out of finances than the will to laugh.
You are kindly invited to celebrate the 15th edition with us from 6th to 8th March in Ljubljana, Slovenia!
