Performance: FEM TV 3.0

FEM TV 3.0

Fem TV 3.0, the third performance in the series of burlesque-cabaret performances with an umbrella title Fem TV, includes parodies of television shows and news programmes and a sarcastic critique of the social up-to-date issues related to gender and sexuality. The performance plays with traditional and contemporary theatrical expressions. It is torn between burlesque, cabaret, variety shows, contemporary dance, performance and body art, video, music performances and improvisational theatre.

Fem TV 3.0 is interactive, but it also makes fun of neoliberal ideology, which tries to convince us that we have, as consumers and viewers, unlimited and free choices. Thematically, the show will focus on the humorous feminist critique of sexism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia and other fears, which are manifested through aggression and hate speech. Individual performances of the show will address social inequality as well as conflicts and a disguised balance of power in movements for social justice, which are generally considered to be in favor of feminism.

The first Fem TV, entitled Želeli ste, pojejte/ Zardeli ste, povejte, was premiered in May 2012 at Menza pri koritu. It was co-created by the Feminist and Queer Festival Red Dawns and Lesbian Feminist University collectives.
The second performance, FEM 2.0, took place in December 2012 at Menza pri koritu, co-organized by the Feminist and Queer Festival Red Dawns and Association Transformator. The latter focuses on the techniques of Theatre of the Oppressed.

An art critic and sociologist, Tea Hvala, in the essay ‘Working on Gender, New Burlesque and Cabaret in Ljubljana’, compared a series of Fem TV performances with Ljubljana’s women’s experimental theatre from the 1980s. In the essay, she mentions a series of similarities: involvement in local feminist initiatives and LGBTI community, intentional unprofessionalism of performers, intermedia of performances and humour as their strongest critical tool for politicizing ignored topics of deliberately biased, class-conscious and feminist views.
