Exhibition – ‘Roland Barthes’ Lover’: Nevena Aleksovski (SRB) and Ana Makuc (SI)

The exhibition ‘Roland Barthes’ Lover’ is a fusion of two intimacies – Nevena Aleksovski’s drawings and Ana Makuc’s poems – into a deliberate and subtle strategy of revolt against patriarchy.

Ana Makuc’s poetry is written in the form of dramatic monologues, which give voice to female characters from history, literature and mythology. Lyric subjects are pulled out of traditional positions and stripped of the victim role or stereotypical mythic fatality, which makes them decisive, independent, reflective – and thus empowers them. The poems thematise the position of women in the literary canon, female-authored literary tradition, sexualities, and problematise relationships between the sexes and gender roles.

Nevena Aleksovski’s drawings are characterized by an intimate experience, chaotic compositions and childlike drawing style. In her work, the artist questions, searches for and explores her position as a woman, migrant, precarious worker, artist and nomad, points to the banality of daily communication, and exposes the spiritual and emotional emptiness of the contemporary human. In the state of self-sufficiency, by staying loyal to her expression, and through viewing art as a place of refuge, the drawings defy capitalistic dictates of the contemporary artistic market, and express an engaged distance from social norms and expectations.

Nevena Aleksovski (1984) obtained her BA in Fine Art Painting and MA in Cultural Studies. She creates in the media of drawings, paintings and video. In her works, she mostly explores personal intimate worlds and issues of identity, home, belonging and feminism. Her works have been exhibited in Slovenia, Serbia and Germany, as individual and group exhibitions. She is active also in the pedagogical sense.

Ana Makuc (1982) is a poet, translator, linguist, researcher and activist, living and working in Ljubljana. She completed her BA in Comparative Literature and Literary Theory, and English Language and Literature (Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia), and her PhD in Gender and Women’s Studies (Lancaster University, Great Britain). Her poetry, literary translations, and scientific articles in the area of feminist literary criticism have been published in such journals as Apokalipsa, Jezik in slovstvo, Mentor, as well as book chapters by Inter-Disciplinary.Net.
