Project: The Feminist WikiMaraton

The aim of The Feminist WikiMaraton is to enrich the Slovenian Wikipedia with articles on women and feminist and LGBTQ* themes. With The Feminist WikiMaraton we want to encourage the contribution of new articles that refer to women. Primarily the articles about women creators / artists, as well as other important women from Slovenia and abroad, which played an important role in the public life of the local or wider community. We will also write articles with the content that is connected to feminism, gender studies and queer theory.

The similar English project named Rewriting Wikipedia has shown that Wikipedia is missing articles about a number of important artists, scientists, politicians and other famous female and LGBTQ* public figures and about the above-mentioned topics. The same is true for the Slovenian Wikipedia. The project ‘Feminist Wikimaraton’ was first conceived and produced by Multimedia Centre in November 2013. Due to high interest it will be repeated during the Red Dawns festival. Wikipedia is the most accessible encyclopedia, however the information it stores are highly deficient when it comes to women. For this reason we kindly invite all connoisseurs and experts of various historical female and LGBTQ* figures and experts of feminist and LGBTQ* themes and everyone interested to join the Feminist Wikimaraton on March 8th in person at Kersnikova street or virtually.

Anyone can participate. Expand an existing article on Wikipedia or write a new one (ideas about which topic to describe can be found here). If you are not familiar with the programming language of Wikipedia don’t worry, we can teach you. If you cannot attend the event as a writer in the programming language of Wikipedia or you do not have time to join us at the event, you can send us an ordinary Word document or an e-mail. Read below for the instructions on how to write your articles and send them to the following address: wikimaraton2013@gmail.com. You may also contribute to the project as a translator. Translate an existing article from the English or any other Wikipedia or contribute your topic to the list of proposals for new articles.

When writing an article, follow these instructions:

– The text should be original. If you  decide to include some short quotes in your article, we ask you to provide a reference for them in the following format: ” Name Surname “, location of publication, year. If possible, please also specify COBISS ID. You can also use Internet sources in which case please provide an Internet link.
– Try to write an article that has at least 1000 characters, if you can’t, a shorter contribution will also be welcome. Most welcome and appreciated as well are longer articles.
– Also send photos. If you have your original photographs, which you are willing to share for general use on Wikipedia, please send them.
