Feminist Choir Z’borke (SI)

Precisely one year ago, in the days of pre-Red Dawns fever during gray February, the idea of a self-organized singing choir was forming.

A group of choir singers took a huge step away from the traditional Slovene choir scene whose agents wittingly or unwittingly reproduce sexist, misogynist and nationalistic messages. They decided to form a non-hierarchical choir ruled by the principle of solidarity and equality through diversity, where music is not only the aesthetic form, but also clear political engagement.

The first meeting on 9 March 2014 was attended by 15 girls, connected by their love of music and unfondness of the messages in contemporary choir and popular music. Through discussion and rehearsals, they quickly developed into a great team. They spent a few weeks deciding what to name the choir until a wordplay which immediately felt “natural” was suggested (Z’borke – “zbor” meaning choir and “borke” female fighters).

Z’borke began by rearranging misogynist songs. They composed a feminist anthem and started working on a repertoire which would focus on women, strengthen solidarity and awareness, and call for a relaxed and non-heteronormative perception of oneself and others. They performed in Cafe Kolaž and supported two feminist marches with their singing.

Now, for the first time, they return to “the scene of the crime” – the Red Dawns festival, where the idea of the choir came to be. They will present both classical choir music and more poppish songs. If you are a fan of polyphonic singing who yearns for a solid dose of uncompromising demands for the equal treatment of women, men and all others, this is a rare opportunity to fulfill both wishes at once. Come and listen!

Ksenija Jus (SI)

Ksenija Jus is a poet, a composer and a singer-songwriter. Her songs are not funny, but are direct and waiting to explode. She has already released nine albums. She is a member of a women’s choir Kombinat and Slovene writers’ Association as well as a co-founder of the festival Kantfest. Ksenija is a person of the 21th century in all of its horror and beauty, and she avoids everything that focuses on the past, with the exception of knowledge of history. Ksenija lives for words and loves almost everything that’s beautiful. Her poems/songs have been translated into several languages.

She will be accompanied by Blaž Grm.

Blaž Grm is an indestructible musician who began his music career as a drummer and guitarist back in 1980 in the legendary Slovene punk band Buldogi. Three and a half decades later, he is still active in this never retired band, while also cooperating with the Kombinat choir and Eva Hren. His former musical comrades are Jani Kovačič, Pero Lovšin, Mia Žnidarič, Lolita, Gledališče Ane Monro, Pavle Kavec aka Trio Oko and many others. On countless appearances, he has recorded over 30 different albums of a wide variety of music genres and subgenres.
