Artist Residency
Studio Azil: Jana Röttger – Etaja (DE)Jana Röttger – Etaja, an independent visual artist from Hanover, is our first artist-in-residence this year at Studio Asylum. The residency will take place from 23 February to 15 March 2026 in Ljubljana, and will conclude with a public presentation as part of the 27th International Feminist and Queer Festival Red Dawns. Etaja’s artistic practice is deeply engaged with social structures, queer-feminist perspectives and binary patterns. Through visual narratives, she opens a space for empowerment, reflection and dialogue, and consciously challenges established social norms. Her work significantly contributes to the contemporary discourse on gender, identity and community, and explores the possibilities of living beyond binary social systems. During the residency, she will create a mural on the Hlev building in ACC Metelkova mesto, entitled Beyond Binaries. The project stems from her MA research on binary social structures and the spaces of possibility beyond them. Feminist theory, corporeality and connection to nature will be at the forefront, with the artist incorporating local cultural, ecological and visual elements characteristic of the Metelkova environment into her work. The project will be created in close collaboration with the Red Dawns Festival collective and will be designed as an open, participatory process. The mural will emphasize feminist perspectives and address the ŽLINTA (FLINTA) persons, while also raising questions of patriarchy, community power and solidarity in social systems dominated by competition and individualism. The residency will be accompanied by a diverse public programme, which will include a discussion with the artist, a guided tour of the exhibition and community meetings aimed at direct exchange between the artist and the local community. The opening and public conversation with the artist will take place in March 2026 as part of the Red Dawns Festival. Jana Röttger – Etaja (1993, Germany) is a freelance artist from Hanover. In 2021, she completed her master’s degree in Design and Media at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hanover. She previously graduated in social sciences from the Leibniz University in Hanover and completed her undergraduate degree in Visual Communication in 2017. Her works have been presented at solo exhibitions in Hanover and as part of international projects in Ghana and Brazil. In her work, she combines research, visual communication and socio-political themes.
