Protest March 8: If our work is worthless, we protest!

We are protesting because March 8 is the international day of struggle of all women for social, economic and political rights. It is a day of protests, it is a day of strikes and a persistent struggle against both capitalism and patriarchy. The eighth of March is the day when we women occupy the streets and squares and say: enough is enough!

When we celebrate March 8 this year, our thoughts are connected to the struggle and suffering of women in colonized countries, we are filled with hatred for their exploiters, and we are inspired by the successes in their struggle. This is the day we weave sisterly bonds with all the women of the world; it is a day of solidarity with Palestinian women. We believe in the common struggle of all the exploited and oppressed as a prerequisite for the liberation of all of us. We believe that the feminist struggle is a priority political and economic issue. Either we are all free, or none of us.

We are workers. We are cleaners, teachers, nurses, students, taxi drivers, nurses, secretaries, educators, seamstresses, farmers. We clean, sell, cook, raise. We are mothers, grandmothers, daughters. We are the ones who invisibly, silently, obediently and diligently do most of the household and caring work.

We are protesting because the work of women in society is invisible, unappreciated and unpaid. We are protesting because our work is of no value to society. We are overworked and underpaid!
We clean and keep house at home, but at the same time, we raise children and take care of siblings, partners, parents and grandparents throughout our lives. They say it’s love – We say it’s unpaid work. They think that our concern for our neighbours is self-evident – We demand that it be recognized as work without which society cannot exist. For work in retail, education and training, cleaning services and long-term care, we are assigned a salary that is lower than the minimum – because our work is apparently peripheral and unimportant in order to make a profit – We are convinced that every job should be decently paid and we demand an equal distribution of the profits from our work!

Our work is not unpaid because it would be less valuable. Our work is not invisible because it is not important. Women’s work is less valued in capitalist patriarchy simply because we are women. Enough of double exploitation! We demand that women’s reproductive work be recognized as work. We demand that we receive a decent payment for it. Above all, we demand the socialization of reproductive work – that the mechanisms of the welfare state be established, which will transfer our work from the shoulders of the individual to the hands of the community.

The liberation of women from their so-called natural responsibilities cannot be solved by each family individually. The entire social order must take care of this. with public kindergartens, canteens, community spaces, homes for the elderly, maternity leave for both parents and other social measures.

We say – enough of all forms of exploitation and oppression! Enough of precarity and poverty! Enough discrimination, violence, wars!

On this year’s International Women’s Day, March 8, 2024, we will therefore gather together at the Congress Square in Ljubljana at 4:00 p.m. and occupy our streets!
