Today Red Dawns and spol.si criticize public discourse with the Thistle (bodeča neža) award, tomorrow, City of Women gives recognition to those deserving for a better world with WOW Awards! ( other organizer, different event, graphic design: Vesna Bukovec)

*******************************

Another feminist year has passed and it is once again time for the bodeča neža (thistle) award ceremony. This dishonourable title can befall on anyone who publicly attacks, degrades and offends others on the basis of one’s gender identity, gender expression and/or sexual orientation.

Especially persons who are active in publicly exposed areas, such as politics, science, (pop)culture, art and media, have big responsibility for co-creation of an open, plural and tolerant society. Their position gives them the privilege to co-shape public opinion. If they are spreading sexist viewpoints and ideas, they are normalising hate speech and legitimising discrimination from a position of power, which is in opposition to the strivings for the society of equal opportunities.

The Bodeča neža award ceremony is a result of the collaboration between Red Dawns collective and the editorial board of the online portal site spol.si. Of course, we cannot exclude the interested public, who can participate in the voting process at several different levels. Anyone who notices a sexist statement can report it at http://bodeca-neza.spol.si/. A working group, composed of the editorial board of spol.si and collective of Red Dawns decides which nominated statements shall be published. Online voting (available at: http://bodeca-neza.spol.si/glasovanje) begins on 23 February and ends on 4 March at 23:59.

The “winning” statement will be chosen by the audience of theaward ceremony hosted by Fem TV and ZIZ Maribor collective in Club Gromka. Those who will attend the event will have the chance to vote for their “favorite” amongst 5 chosen statements.

You can watch the event through our Facebook page on this link.

Fem TV

Fem TV is a collective that performs TV shows and news show parodies as well as critiques the social narratives on gender and sexuality. Its performances take a play on traditional as well as contemporary theatre practice. They touch every form of expression from burlesque, cabaret, varieté, performance, video and music as well as improv. Performing, script, direction, video, animations: Eva Jus, Tadeja Pirih, Ana Čigon, Bernarda Kristan, Pia Skušek, Slobodan Malić, Ana Grobler, Ana Makuc; guitar: Vasja Progar; mask: Jessica Martinez Lima.

“Tea Hvala speaks of Fem TV in her essay Working on Gender, New Burlesque and Cabaret in Ljubljana and she points out the intentional unprofessionalism of the performers and the humour as the most important tools for politicizing overlooked topics. The trashesthetics of Fem TV 3.0 is not just in its fille rouge but also in the stance it takes on the media’s misrepresentation of reality with the emphasis on criticizing the distorted image of women’s bodies and their role as objects of the beauty industry as it openly perpetuates the patriarchy.” (source: MMC)

Important

With the Ordinance on Interim Measures for the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases COVID-19, which entered into force on 21 February 2022, the Government is also releasing restrictions on cultural activities and the collective exercise of religious freedom.
