Diana Fabiánová (Slovakia): THE MOON INSIDE YOU

Headaches, cramps, fever and depression – having a menstruation is not a joke, especially if you have to hide the symptoms. The documentary film, The Moon inside You, is made by the Slovakian director Diana Fabiánova. With a keen sense of perspective and humour, the author goes in search of answers. She reveals taboos connected to the menstrual cycle. The most wide-ranging theories put forward by anthropologists, psychologists, journalists, gynaecologists, and belly-dance teachers are intercut with old-fashioned information films and animated clips. Throughout the film, we also follow an 11-year old Dominika, who is still in expectation of her first menstruation. The author shows menstruation as a phenomenon, where personal experience meets social stigma.
