Iztok Klančar (SLO/NL): My Men (2012, 4’20”)

An essay about two gay men. A gay relationship often begins with physical attraction as a high concentrate of sexual energy. Through the years, it evolves into a deep mutual understanding. I ventured into the world of two men who shaped my life. This project is exploring the specifics of gay intimacy, told through a visual diary. The photographic essay is shown in a short film as fast and brutal sequences of still images and text. There is also a photo book where the story gets a metaphoric depth.

Iztok Klančar (1980, Trbovlje) studied art history at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana and Freie Universität in Berlin, and photography at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague.

Artist statement: I am a visual essayist, working with photography and moving image.I present my work in publications and audiovisual installations. Using my seemingly informal visual approach, I question myself continuously, searching for the meaning of being.

Vika Kirchenbauer (DE): Like Rats Leaving a Sinking Ship (2012, 24′)

„Rats are glorious deserters and we must admire them. Rats don´t want to be captains trying to keep the cause afloat. But swim on open water.“ Vika Kirchenbauer’s “Like Rats Leaving a Sinking Ship” is a very personal work. In it she examines social conventions with the help of spoken texts, film material and background noise on various narrative planes. What does it mean, to be a man or a woman? What does it mean, not to fit into a gender role? The artist confronts the viewer with her own transidentity. In a series of atmospheric dense scenes, she shows the various ways of looking at this. She matches spoken medical reports with her own statements and memories. The accompanying film scenes, in their turn, refer to family, society, sexuality, the law and the state. These aspects are tied to the question of self-identity. Scenes in which one can only see people’s legs, shadows on zebra crossings, or people who cannot clearly be identified as a man or a woman emphasise this. Vika Kirchenbauer  works with contrasts: moving, expressive scenes alternate with imaginary family photographs, which the spoken text elevates to another level of meaning. The result is a complex web of text, film and sound. (Text by Susanne Kube)

Theo Solnik (DE): Anna Pavlova Lives in Berlin (2011, 79′)

Anna Pavlova, Russian party queen, embodies the brutal happiness and tragedy of the Berlin party generation of our times. Lost in the edge between insanity and seldom poetical lucidity, wandering alone through the streets of Berlin, she shows us the side of the party world that we rarely see.  Anti-hero of civilized society, her existence is a desperate attempt to live in a never-ending happiness, in order not to see the world that begins when the party music ends.

Awards: German National Gallery Prize for young film-art, Promotional Award of the city of Duisburg, Special Prize of the Jury at the International Film Festival Cinerama BC, New Berlin Film Award, Helene-Schwarz-Award, Boddinale Jury Award.

Theo Solnik was born in Sao Paulo in 1981 and began to work with theater as an actor and musician when he was 14 years old. After having studied Philosophy and Social Sciences in the University of Oslo, he shot several short films as director and cinematographer, worked as freelancer journalist and photographer and as a musician and musical director in several theater productions. Since 2006 he is a student at the German Film and Television Academy (DFFB) in Berlin.
