Transformator Theatre (Slovenia)

Transformator’s speciality is ‘theatre on demand’. They spice up their sensual, original, humorous and generous theatre cuisine with bold interventions; according to need and ad hoc. When the Transformator spirit rises, a fiery social sense and the need for change spring up. The ‘oppressed’ become the visible and the heard. The performance leaves more than an aftertaste of revolt. In short, rebellion has never been so sexy.

The story is surgically treated with the technique of a forum theatre, its open form cutting into the story right after the twist, triumphantly dropping off the coat of unlimited possibilities, which transforms the passive spectator into an active reformer of the play. 18^th century costumes and flirtation with romantic novels help the female audience dismiss the seemingly cliché story, which points to the subtle timelessness of forced social norms. The spectators get the feeling of a safe distance in time, adding their own experiences, new components and actors to the plot, supplementing the repressive elements of the play with emancipatory ones.

The theatre and activist group Transformator looks up to the Theatre of the Oppressed. The concept which encourages social action was first developed in the 1960’s by Augusto Boal. The Transformator group consists of participants of a 17-day intensive training on the techniques of the Theatre of the Oppressed, run by Birgit Fritz (Theatre of the Oppressed Vienna, Austria) in the fall of 2010 in Ljubljana. The Transformator team draws its creative energy from current social topics, chewing them over long enough to be able to offer them to the audience in their distilled form: to taste, transform and apply constructive criticism.
