Theatre of shadows

Shadow theatre performance

Serbian Cultural Centre Danilo Kiš (SLO): The Sad and Magnificent Story of Sotiria Belu

The interplay of puppets, shadows and light is going to revive the story of Sotiria Belu (1921-1997), the greatest singer of rebetiko (urban Greek folk music). Belu was an outed lesbian, an antifascist rebel and a musician who never compromised her principles in the face of (state) repression.

The shadow theatre of the Serbian Cultural Centre Danilo Kiš from Ljubljana wants to reestablish shadow theatre as the medium of vulnerable social groups. Historically, due to its simplicity, the shadow theatre was always the medium of the lower classes, the poor and the rejected. Accordingly, its main themes were poverty, famine and social exclusion. The shadow theatre is still vibrant in Asia. In Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in Serbia it was popular until the 1930s.
