Bodeča neža award ceremony with Fem TV and FPZ Z’borke

You are kindly invited to the Bodeča neža award ceremony with Fem TV and FPZ Z’borke on Wednesday, 6 March 2019 at 21:00 in Social Centre Rog, AT Rog.

************************************************

Another year has passed and the first festival event of Red Dawns will yet again be dedicated to the bodeča neža (thistle) award ceremony. This dishonorable title can befall on anyone who publicly attacks, degrades and offends others on the basis of one’s gender identity, gender expression and/or sexual orientation. Especially persons who are active in publicly exposed areas, such as politics, science, (pop)culture, art and media, have big responsibility for co-creation of an open, plural and tolerant society. Their position gives them the privilege to co-shape public opinion. If they are spreading sexist viewpoints and ideas, they are normalizing hate speech and legitimizing discrimination from a position of power, which is in opposition to the striving for the society of equal opportunities.

The bodeča neža award ceremony is a result of the collaboration between Red Dawns collective and the editorial board of the online portal site spol.si. Of course, we cannot exclude the interested public, who can participate in the voting process at several different levels. Anyone who notices a sexist statement can report it at http://bodeca-neza.spol.si/. A working group, composed of the editorial board of spol.si and collective of Red Dawns decides which nominated statements shall be published. Online voting (available at: http://bodeca-neza.spol.si/glasovanje) begins on 26th February and ends on 4th March at 23:59. The “winning” statement will be voted by the audience at the solemn award ceremony, which will be enriched by the performances of Fem TV and Z’borke.

Fem TV is a collective that performs TV shows and news show parodies as well as critiques the social narratives on gender and sexuality. Its performances take a play on traditional as well as contemporary theater practice. They touch every form of expression from burlesque, cabaret, varieté, performance, video and music as well as improvisation.

“Tea Hvala speaks of Fem TV in her essay Working on Gender, New Burlesque and Cabaret in Ljubljana and she points out the intentional unprofessionalism of the performers and the humour as the most important tools for politicizing overlooked topics. The trashesthetics of Fem TV 3.0 is not just in its fille rouge but also in the stance it takes on the media’s misrepresentation of reality with the emphasis on criticizing the distorted image of women’s bodies and their role as objects of the beauty industry as it openly perpetuates the patriarchy.” (source: MMC)

FPZ Z’borke is a self-organized feminist, non-hierarchical and anti-capitalist choir. Through the songs Z’borke sing, interpret and re-write, the choir aims to bring to the forefront the fights against sexism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, and any form of domination in society through an intersectional perspective. More than spreading ideas, Z’borke believe in the power of singing to bond communities as well as empower each member and a group as a whole.
