Juliet Jacques (UK): The Woman in the Portrait Kindly invited to a literary evening with the groundbreaking British transgender writer Juliet Jacques, who will present her new book of short stories, The Woman in the Portrait. The conversation with the author will be held by Ana Makuc. The Woman in the Portrait collects Juliet Jacques’ short fiction from 2008 to 2024, including several new stories alongside previously published works. They all respond to art and culture, often but not always from a queer perspective, ranging from a young trans person inspired to assume the identity of a Russian silent film actress to a sculptor who makes a monument to the victims of austerity. Using a variety of forms, they engage with cultural politics and the politics of culture with style and wit. Juliet Jacques is a writer and filmmaker based in London. She is the author of Front Lines (Cipher Press, 2023), Rayner Heppenstall: A Critical Study (Dalkey Archive, 2007), Trans: A Memoir (Verso, 2015), and Variations (Influx Press, 2021). Her landmark column on gender reassignment appeared in The Guardian, entitled ‘A Transgender Journey’ (2010-12) and she has written for London Review of Books, Granta, Sight & Sound, Frieze, Art Review, New York Times, and many more. Juliet was included on The Independent on Sunday Pink List of influential LGBT people in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. 𝐀𝐧𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐮𝐜 is a Slovene poet, translator and activist.
