Juliet Jacques: "Revivification: Art, activism and politics in Ukraine", film still, 2016 Film projection of films by Juliet Jacques (GB) and a discussion with Verity Ritchie (SI/GB/USA) You are kindly invited to a film projection and a discussion on Friday, 1 March at 17:00 at [A] Infoshop, ACC Metelkova mesto. The event will feature three short films by Juliet Jacques (GB). After the screening there will be a discussion moderated by Verity Ritchie (SI/GB/USA). ******************************** Juliet Jacques is a writer and filmmaker based in London. As well as publishing two books, she writes short fiction, as well as journalism on literature, film, art, music, politics, gender, sexuality and football. Her work has appeared in The Guardian, London Review of Books, Granta, Sight & Sound, Frieze, New York Times, The Washington Post, TimeOut, New Humanist and many other places. She has also authored and co-authored several films as a filmmaker, writer and actor. Verity Ritchie is a trans and bisexual activist with more than a decade of activist experience in England, United States and Slovenia. She is also an illustrator, comic artist, writer and all-around creative person. She currently lives in Ljubljana where she coordinates Kvartir’s trans meet-ups.
Revivification: Art, activism and politics in Ukraine (2016) Revivification looks at how contemporary artists in Ukraine, inspired by radical ideals as well as queer and feminist theory, are trying to work in this context, looking back at the socialist past and trying to build a more utopian future. Directed and narrated by Juliet Jacques, shot and edited by Oksana Kazmina, and commissioned by CHASE (Consortium for the Arts and Humanities in the South-East) and the Izolyatsia platform for cultural initiatives in Kyiv. Approach/Withdraw (2016, co-directed with Ker Wallwork) The film explores how public understandings of oestrogen and sex hormones affect the sense of self and relationships of those who feel at odds with their assigned gender. Commissioned by the BFI and King’s College London as part of their Queering Love, Queering Hormones programme, in collaboration with no.w.here. Narrated by Rebecca Root. Colour, 16mm, 9:50. You Will Be Free (2017) The film reflects on embodiment, the afterlife and political responses to the HIV/AIDS crisis. Narrated by Anna-Louise Plowman with music by Venn Rain, and commissioned by Studio Voltaire (London).
