Stefania Azzarello (Italy/Netherlands): Videocracy and Populism in Italy

In a videocracy the key to power is the image. In Italy Silvio Berlusconi has dominated the production and distribution of images over the last thirty years. As a TV-magnate and later as “Presidente”, he created a system of TV-entertainment that uses the bodies of young women as its most profitable “screen”.

Stefania Azzarello, a student of Gender Studies and an activist, has been studying the consequences of Italian videocracy on the changing (yet as limiting as ever) gender roles that are available to young women – as well as men – in Italy today. The discussion will start with her comments on excerpts from Erik Gandini’s documentary Videocracy (2009) and short documentary Il Corpo delle Donne (2009) by Lorella Zanardo, Marco Malfi Chindemi in Cesare Cantù.

The discussion is organised by Red Dawns in cooperation with A-Infoshop.
