Politics of Identity and Mechanisms of Exclusion: How to Fight against Intersecting Oppressions?

How do diverse forms of discrimination influence the life of individuals? Do sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism and other mechanism of exclusion affect lesbians, gays, migrants, the poor, and (dis)abled people all in the same way? And what if you are exposed to more than one form of discrimination? When do bodies become desirable, precious, dangerous, uncomfortable, exploitable, or overlooked?

Despite a declared equality of all, people are affected by power structures and their entirely concrete, material consequences. An intersection scrutinizes the power relations, hegemonial discourses, norms, values and becoming of a subject and suggests we find new strategies in our fights against the mechanisms of repression and the social logic of inclusion/exclusion, based on various categories of differences.

LesMigraS, an anti-violence and anti-discrimination group within Lesbenberatung Berlin e.V. is opening a discussion on the experience of and struggles against intersecting oppressions, based on gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and class with a presentation and video screening on the situation in Germany. The discussion is going to address also the following issues: what are the main obstacles for male migrant workers in Slovenia; where are the Roma lesbians and gays; is there racism in the feminist-queer scene and what forms it takes; do identity politics provoke conflicts, and is there solidarity, is the fight against homogeneity possible.

Social Center Rog), Tanja Škander (LesMigraS) and Urška Strle (ŠKUC – LL)
Moderator: Lana Zdravković
