Sisterhood* across borders: Lesbian and queer feminist activism in the post-Yugoslav space

You are kindly invited to the book presentation of Sisterhood And Unity: Lesbian Activism in the Post-Yugoslav Space and a debate on Thursday, 7 March 2019 at 18:00,  at Anarcho-queer-feminist space, Autonomous factory Rog.

***************************

In recent years, a number of international academic publications have engaged with the history and politics of lesbian and queer activism in the post-Yugoslav space. After the presentation at the Belgrade Befem festival in December 2018, one of the editors of this and other related volumes, along with two activists will introduce the latest publication entitled Sisterhood And Unity: Lesbian Activism in the Post-Yugoslav Space.
This publication positions Red Dawns in the context of a local and international lesbian and queer activism and addresses other – no less important – autonomous feminist lesbian and feminist queer initiatives. One of these is Kasandra, which co-initiated the festival but does not exist any more, whereas Lesbian-Feminist University and the Anarchist-queer-feminist space Afkors at the Autonomous Factory Rog are still alive and kicking.
Presentation will focus on the intersections between experiences of lesbian and queer feminist activism in the post-Yugoslav space, on the strategies of building sisterhood* across borders, and the challenges of maintaining continuity (if there is any at all). We may also address the points of contact between academic publishing and practices of self-organised movements and touch upon the questions of co-building regional queer feminist archives.

Presenters: Maja Pan, Bojan Bilić, Teja Oblak

Maja Pan is a feminist philosopher and a non-formal educator, active in the regional and transnational activism from 1997 onwards.

Bojan Bilić is a political sociologist and researcher at the Institute for Social Sciences at the University of Lisbon.

Teja Oblak collaborates with the collective of Lesbian Feminist University in Ljubljana and the feminist radio show Sektor Ž at Radio Student.

Presentation and debate will be held in Slovene and English.

Co-production/co-organisation: Anarcho-queer-feminist space, Lesbian Feminist University (LFU).
