Exhibition

Queer Belgrade Collective

A documentary exhibition about recent political incidents in Serbia that have left the most profound impact on the lives and work of Belgrade’s queer activists. The Queer Belgrade Collective published the first edition of the bilingual (Serbian-English) manual Antifašizam i direktna akcija (Antifascism and direct action) in 2008 and will be presenting their second, revised edition from 2011 at the Red Dawns Festival.

Queer Belgrade is a radical queer group, established in 2005 with the help of a strong transnational community. Its main activities include the organization of the Queer Belgrade Festival (performances, discussions, concerts and workshops) as well as publishing and participating in various direct actions and projects together with other feminist and LGBT initiatives.

The main purpose of this travelling exhibition is the promotion and discussion of their latest book, Queer Belgrade: Antifascism & Direct Action. The book documents and reflects on the 2008 edition of Queer Belgrade Festival when homophobic fascists (members of the Obraz group) attacked the participants and organizers, revealing the need for a strong antifascist queer movement. The exhibition also seeks to portray the changes that took place after 2008: the ban on Pride Parade in 2009 and 2010 and the introduction of the white Schengen visa which grants Serbian citizens travel to EU countries without visas.

The texts accompanying the exhibition were written in cooperation with various local groups and associations.
